Favorite Covers: March 2011

Each month I feature some of my favorite covers from that month's new releases or re-releases and explain why I think those particular covers are so amazing.

Here are some of my favorite covers for March 2011:

Wither by Lauren DeStefano
Why I love it:

The expression and pose of the model really capture the mood of the premise for this dystopian.  I love the imagery of the caged bird and all that it implies with regard to the character.  I also really enjoy the graphics which connect the model's dejected facial expression, the bird in its cage, and her hands which seem to be looking for something to grasp onto.  And that dress!  It is gorgeous in a disheveled way that makes it aesthetically pleasing but still moody.  It also looks a little feathery which makes for a stronger connection between the girl and the caged bird.

The Vespertine by Saundra Mitchell
Why I love it:

I really like the movement in this cover.  The billowing of the dress and the motion of the hair flying out as she whips her neck around to look behind her give a sense of urgency.  She is running from something.  The model's expression is fearful, haunted even.  It makes me very interested in finding out what sort of ghosts she is trying to escape.  I also really enjoy the rich earthy tones topped by the yellow lettering in a font that itself also lends to that old, haunted vibe that I get from the rest of the cover.

Like Mandarin by Kirsten Hubbard
Why I love it:

While I love covers with gorgeous dresses and/or mesmerizing surroundings or graphics, sometimes simplicity is the way to go.  I love the simplicity of Like Mandarin's cover art.  The model's back is against the wall, and she looks a little like a lion backed into a corner.  I love the nearly blank expression on her face and the drab background paired with the blank upper portion of the jacket.  Plus, the spine of the jacket is orange and there's not nearly enough orange spines in this world.
